Nobody likes a self-obsessed brand

Original content is how a company gets a personality. In most cases, it also shows a company has only one subject: itself.

Read an average corporate feed and you get announcements, awards, product notes, more announcements. Every item is true. Collectively it is a person at a party who has asked you nothing.

Curation is not filler

Sharing other people’s work is treated as what you post when you have nothing of your own. It is closer to the opposite. Choosing what to put in front of your audience is an editorial act, and editorial judgment is exactly what authority is made of.

The test is whether you are sharing something useful or something that merely fills the slot. Audiences can tell, faster than most marketing teams believe, and a feed of fluff is worse than an empty one because it teaches people to scroll past your name.

Consistency beats brilliance

Social platforms forget you quickly. A brilliant post every quarter loses to a decent one every week, and there is no cleverness that compensates for absence. Curation makes the weekly cadence survivable for a company without a full-time writer — which is most companies.

Reciprocity is the whole mechanism

The old outbound model assumed a one-way channel: you broadcast, they receive. Social does not work that way and never did. Share other people’s work and some of them share yours. That is not a growth hack; it is just how any community has ever functioned.

Followers who feel seen become something more useful than followers. They repeat you to people you will never reach.

You are the company you keep

A brand’s reputation is substantially a function of what it points at. Consistently surface the serious work in your field and you become part of the context in which that field is discussed. Surface nothing but your own press releases, and you stay outside it, shouting.

Which is a long way of saying: before you write another post about your company, find one worth sharing about somebody else’s.
